03.06.2010 - Big Weekend for Catamount Athletics!

 Richie Gordon Scores 16 as Western Carolina Advances to the SoCon Semifinals with 68-57 Win over Elon -

Stiffling defense and an 18-to-0 first-half by the North Division's second seed Western Carolina led the Catamounts to a 68-57 quarterfinal victory over Elon Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship Saturday at the Bojangles' Coliseum.

 

Junior Richie Gordon led four Catamounts in double figures with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting as WCU won its third-straight.

 

WCU improves to 22-10, advancing to the conference semifinals for the first-time since 1999, while the Phoenix, No. 6 North, ends their season at 9-23.

Western Carolina Outlasts Illinois, 4-2, in Keith LeClair Classic-

 Western Carolina used 11 hits and had four Catamounts reach multi-hit games as WCU defeated Illinois, 4-2, in day two of the Keith LeClair Classic at Clark-LeClair Stadium. With the victory, the

 

Catamounts improve to 8-1, continuing the program's best start in school history.

WCU (8-1) spread out the runs in four innings to dispose of the Fighting Illini who fell to 1-4 on the season. In total, Western Carolina out-numbered Illinois in the hit column, 11-to-7. The middle of the Catamount lineup proved to be lethal as the three through six hitters each collected a pair of hits.

Western Carolina Edged by UNCG 57-55 in Southern Conference Tournament
Number 8 seed Western Carolina women's basketball (7-23) ended its season on Thursday, with a 57-55 loss to No. 9 seed UNC Greensboro (10-19) Thursday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament in Bojangles Coliseum.

Trailing by two with eight seconds remaining, senior Jessica Jackson launched a three-pointer for the win, but it went wide and the Spartans ripped down the rebound. Western Carolina tied the game, 1:13 left, when sophomore guard Kaila'Shea Menendez drove in for a lay-up and was fouled. Down by one point, 55-54, Menendez drained the free throw to tie the game at 55.
